2 cellos 2 pianos and ring modulation
performed by Gentle Fire

Ruthie's Piece (all watched over by machines of loving grace) was originally written for the singer Ruthie Smith, but this version is one made for Gentle Fire. It was the first piece I made with a computer. Vowel sounds from the eponymous poem by Richard Brautigan were analysed for their dominant overtones, and the frequencies of (voice) pitches and connected overtones were fed into an IBM mainframe computer, to give frequencies for piano pitches that would, when ring modulated with the voice pitches and overtones, result in a particular mathematical relationship between the input and output frequencies. This sounds very arid, but the result is, I think, not.
